With Mother’s Day right around the corner, our thoughts turn toward our little ones and all the blessings that come with being a mom. Whether you have one child or seven, you have special memories with each that will last a lifetime. At Red Apple Reading, we would like to suggest that this year you consider Mother’s Day in light of the theme of Story. After all, every mom (and child) has a story, and each story is precious. Let’s look at a few ways you can make this special day revolve around stories!
A Story Recalled
I know my children love to hear stories about their birth. My middle daughter likes to recount how she was only a couple of minutes away from being born on the next day, Friday the 13th. I have always been amazed at how much each of my kids likes to hear me and their father recall stories of when they were young. This Mother’s Day, why not get out the baby books and look through them with your kiddos? As you look at the pictures and growth charts, talk about how special each of your little ones are. All of you are sure to receive a blessing as you take a trip down memory lane!
A Story Written
It is always fun to hear stories from the perspective of our children. Most parents have folders full of mementos from their child’s preschool or elementary school classes. Why do we keep these things? Maybe it’s because we get a glimpse of what our little one was like at each of his developmental stages. Mother’s Day is a perfect time to make a memory by letting our kiddos write about Mom from their point of view. For instance, you could request that each of your children write a little story about a favorite time spent with you. If your little one doesn’t write yet, have him dictate his memory to someone else. Afterwards, sit down with each of them and read their story together. This could even become a family tradition! Imagine the joy you will experience when you read years of stories written by your child.

You saw this one coming didn‘t you! Yes, Red Apple Reading always finds a way to include reading in any event. You must admit, reading a book together is the perfect way to wrap up your mom themed day! Of course, you will want a good book about mothers and we have a few to suggest! You simply cannot go wrong with the classic, The Runaway Bunny by Margaret Wise Brown. This sweet read reminds little ones that their mommy will always come for them. Another good book to end Mother’s Day with is Love You Forever by Robert Munsch. After reading this one together, your little one is sure to be reminded that your love for him will endure. Finally, A Chair for My Mother (Vera B. Williams) tells the story of a child’s love for her mother. Whether you choose one of the above books or another favorite, make sure you end the day with a good read and a good cuddle!
