President's Day activities - Red Apple ReadingWe hope everyone is enjoying their long President’s Day weekend! Even if you and your kids don’t get the day off from work and school, President’s Day is still a great time to remember past and present Presidents.

If you’re looking for a way to commemorate this holiday with your kids, Red Apple Reading has 5 great President’s Day activities for children. Check them out!

  1. Vote on a Favorite Book – Kids love to voice their opinion. Voting between 2 or 3 books is an excellent way to introduce kids to the electoral process. Why not vote on the next book to be read aloud at bedtime? Be sure to make this process fun by providing ballots and a voting box with a slot for completed ballots!
  2. Write a Campaign Speech – If you have children who are more experienced writers, let them have a stab at writing their very own campaign speech. This is a particularly timely activity since it’s an election year. My 9th grade daughter was recently assigned this activity in English class. Not only did it turn out to be good essay practice, it also helped her reflect on issues that are important to her.
  3. If I Were President, I Would… – For children who are beginning writers, this activity serves as a good substitute to the one above. Simply have your child or student finish this sentence: “If I were President, I would…” Don’t be overly concerned with spelling errors when reading these. The main objective is to practice handwriting and expression. These sentences are sure to bring a smile to the reader’s face!
  4. Coin Bubble Maps – I found this creative activity on The First Grade Parade. Parents and teachers can double the learning fun with these coin bubble maps! Kids not only learning about the presidents on each coin, but they also learn about different coin values.
  5. Books for President’s Day – Finally, if you’re looking for some good books for children to read for President’s Day, The Teacher Next Door has 12 great picks! This list contains presidential biographies, trivia and facts about presidents, as well as a hilarious fictional book about a duck that runs for president. Be sure to peruse this list if you’re looking for a good book for President’s Day.

Happy President’s Day from all of us at Red Apple Reading!
